Thanks to a nudge from my dear friend Annie, I’ve decided to enter this year’s Capture the Colour photo competition. The competition goes like this: Select five photos in the categories of Red, Blue, Green, Yellow & White. Post a blog of your photos and then nominate five of your favorite bloggers to participate. These are my five pictures. I’m really happy Annie nominated me for this, because each of these photos represents something intense in my life. It’s a nice moment that I get to share them all at once, even though they are totally unrelated to each other outside of this contest.

I hope all of you are having a great week thus far and have killer weekend plans. I just returned from Turkey (blog post coming on that this weekend) and plan to take it easy and recover from the  PVSD (Post Vacation Stress Disorder) that is Jetlag.capture-the-colour-contest-betel-burma-photography-buddha-drinks-fanta-4801

Color: Green

Date: March 4, 2013

Place: Yangon, Myanmar

Moment: My first day in Burma, I was shooting hands for a photo blog I had in mind. The most common thing you will see on the streets of Yangon in the early morning is street stall betel nut sellers rolling the day’s chew

Color: Blue

Date: July 20, 2013

Place: Denver, Colorado

Moment: This is my brother and my niece Ashlyn, having fun at the pool. Ashlyn is a twin, and she’s definitely the rowdier of the two. Take note of the rock fingers. No one told her to do that, which is hilarious … considering she’s mid-air and only 4.

Color: Red

Date: Sept 10th, 2013

Place: Istanbul, Turkey

Moment: This was snapped about 10 minutes before I was hit with tear gas during a street protest off istiklal Avenue. This guy was way more prepared than I was.

Color: White

Date: October 22, 2011

Place: Hale County, AL

Moment: My friend Holly and I took a roadtrip to write a story on Hale County, Alabama. It’s one of the poorest places in my home state, making it also one of the poorest places in America. However, the people who live there and the people who take the time to visit will also inform you that this county is a little hidden gem. This is the post office in the tiny town of Newbern on a cold fall day. It made me want to sit down and read Eudora Welty all afternoon.

Color: Yellow

Date: March 5, 2013

Place: Yangon, Burma

Moment: I decided to lay down and shoot people walking past me inside the Shwedagon Pagoda. With no roof, the stone floor gets incredibly hot. I remember laying there, thinking how badly their feet must be burning in this slow, silent processional

Now, per the request of the contest, I nominate the following bloggers to participate.

Holly Mullins Carlisle, from RoseGolden Flowers: @for_rosegolden

Flash Parker, from Flash Parker Photography: @FlashParker
